WEARING A MASK: WHAT SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT IRRITATION?
Drop the masks! If, with the barrier gestures, this accessory has become essential to our health, it also endangers our skin... So, how to respect the rules of public hygiene, while saving your skin?
WHERE DO THESE IRRITATIONS COME FROM?
We all know this feeling of oppression after spending several hours under a mask... Tell yourself that it's the same for your skin, you breathe less well and it's also the case for your epidermis! And, as in the natural equation, we are not all equal, some will do very well, others with redness or imperfections, a sign that your skin tolerates this confinement less well.
Devil ! Why this reaction? Our face is used to being exposed to the open air and wearing a mask disrupts its breathing routine. Two types of reactions are currently observed. The first is due to friction at the contact points of the mask. This friction can lead to irritation at the top of the cheekbones, the top of the nose, the chin, but also behind the ears. The second is mainly linked to bacterial proliferation due to the humidity produced by breathing under the mask. Indeed, the skin is asphyxiated there, the perspiration is no longer evacuated, the pores are therefore clogged in the areas covered by the mask. This leads to itching or dry skin. In this case, dermatologists speak of irritation and not of allergies.
Even if they remain for the most part benign, they are nonetheless unpleasant for the skin! Especially since they will tend to increase certain already existing pathologies such as acne or rosacea. Obviously, dry and sensitive skin is not spared. Indeed, some masks absorb the oil present in the skin and therefore aggravate skin dryness.
As for oily skin, wearing a mask is also fatal. This can block oil and skin debris in the pores and therefore create acne. The cause ? regular rubbing on the skin causes it to produce too much collagen in the damaged areas.
Finally, to this, let's not forget the stress and anxiety factors which, too, probably have a role to play in the appearance of these irritations.
