Helicotherapy
Thanks to more than 10 years of research and innovation, Mademoiselle Agathe created L'Hélicitherapy. Helitherapy comes from the term “helix”, the scientific name for the snail and the Greek “therapeía” for care: an etymology therefore simple to understand, developed for more than 8 years.
Helicotherapy is learning from nature instead of taking from nature.
Our research by Helicitherapy is to optimize the benefits of snail slime proteins for the skin by the synergy of our mucus extract with organic plants sourced in the heart of the Pays de la Loire. Because it is indeed the osmosis respectful of the animal and the plant which gives its effectiveness to our cosmetic treatments in helicotherapy.
The goal is to revitalize our skin thanks to the benefits of snail slime. Helicitherapy offers treatments based on snail slime extract harvested exclusively by hand, snail by snail, with the greatest respect for the animal. The mucus thus collected is known for its exceptional richness in proteins, peptides and vitamins. Its secular virtues of regeneration, healing, purification and anti-aging are suitable for all skin types, even the most fragile.
It will therefore have been necessary to wait for the results of a series of 4 scientific studies to see the birth of Helicitherapy.
These scientific studies in mass spectrometry and chromatography, carried out by the Natural History Museum of Paris and the University of Rouen have demonstrated that our extract is very rich in proteins and peptides such as collagens and hemocyanin which are regenerating cellular, directly helping to fight against wrinkles and fine lines, or even actin which is an excellent healing agent. It is also interesting to note that Hippocrates or Pliny the Elder already recommended snail slime 400 BC. JC to regenerate and heal the skin.
What is helicotherapy based on?
A natural evolution of more than 540 million years
The snail is a totally exceptional little animal. The oldest known fossils date from the Cambrian 541 million years ago. That is more than 200 million years before the appearance of the 1st dinosaurs and therefore + or – 500 million years before the 1st men. We can already admit that if this mollusk has had so many years of natural evolution, it is because its anatomy is particularly well adapted to life.
There are more than 100,000 species of gastropods identified to date.
Gastropods are present in all environments: polar waters, deep seas, lakes, rivers, wetlands, the most arid environments (can withstand temperatures of 65°), dry environments, in the mountains at thousands of meters above sea level. There are also marine snails: winkles, purples, littorines with significant variations within each of these species. There are 103,000 species of gastropods identified to date .
The land snail hardly moves and bio-accumulates the specificities of its environment during its growth. This allows it, in a healthy environment rich in biodiversity, to accumulate an innumerable sum of vitamins and vegetable proteins that it carries in its mucus .
Over 2400 years of therapy
The snail has been, through the centuries, the object of many attentions: alternately mythical and symbolic animal. If this little animal, a little against the tide of our always hurried societies, is appreciated in the kitchen, it is also appreciated in medicine, a field in which it has been attributed multiple properties since Antiquity.
Mona Lisa's Beauty Secret
Many writings reveal multiple uses of snails, especially for therapeutic purposes. Hippocrates 400 BC. AD, and Pliny the Elder 23 to 79 AD. J.-C. recommended it in boiled form, “this remedy is sovereign to soften the pain caused by burns, abscesses and other wounds”. Celse, Roman philosopher of the llth century, recommends the raw and crushed snail with its shell as a healing agent; boiled, it affirms its emollient properties.
And we even found proof that surely the most important female representative of the world's cultural heritage, Mona Lisa del Giocondo , depicted in the masterpiece of the great master Leonardo da Vinci, already used snail slime extract. in 1514 as a facial to reduce wrinkles . Nowadays, many other scientific works have been able to confirm the therapeutic properties of snail slime with, in particular , protective and regenerating effects for the skin . Mucus, naturally rich in collagen, vitamins and essential amino acids, is essential food for the skin, its basic vitamins are powerful antioxidants that delay the aging of the epidermis .
A harvest by hand with the greatest respect for the animal
For Patrice, our snail farmer in Creux de la Tine in the Drôme, a pioneer in organic snail farming in France for more than 30 years: "The most important thing with snails is knowing how to take your time" "More that for any other animal, the notion of time is essential, since to flourish it needs to evolve slowly", it is for this reason that we collect the mucus only by hand, snail by snail, at the moment the most opportune for the animal, that is to say the one where it will be the least disturbed in its natural occupations. It is only under these conditions that the animal gives the best with a thick mucus very rich in protein.
The most important thing with snails is knowing how to take your time.
It is conventional in biomimicry to focus on organisms that have been able to adapt over time. It is therefore fascinating to note that the shell of the snail, which it manufactures with its mucus, is a natural armor sufficiently effective to withstand time and climatic upheavals . It is amazing to think that a mode of defense as simple as curling up in its shell is so effective in perpetuating its species.
Especially since the question is how can they walk on one foot in the glue? Because the sticky mucus produced by snails is not only a lubricant, it is also a glue. This mucus, produced by glands located in the center of the foot, is a complex mixture of proteins, peptides, and other metabolites that possess thixotropic properties . That is to say, it can be either liquid or solid depending on the mechanical constraints imposed on it.
Scientifically proven effectiveness
Mademoiselle Agathe is resolutely focused on the effectiveness and quality of her treatments, both in the choice of our active ingredients and their concentrations, and in the innovation of our formulations. Therefore, we also wanted to provide a scientific approach with our own data on our snail slime extract conducted over the last 4 years.
Snail slime reveals fantastic cosmetic properties.
A moisturizing and nourishing action with the collagens and elastin present, they determine the properties of suppleness and elasticity of the skin.
A regenerating action with hemocyanin and RNA helicase which act on the aging process as well as cell renewal of the skin.
A purifying action , antimicrobial peptides and cytokeratins, serve as a support for the immune system and limit the proliferation of bacteria on the skin.
A healing action , allantoin and actin are involved in the wound healing process and promote tissue repair.
An antioxidant action thanks to vitamins D and serine proteases which reduce inflammation and neutralize the action of free radicals.
An exfoliating action which, with glycolic acid, restores radiance to the complexion by eliminating dead skin and reducing skin spots.
Helicotherapy is a maximum of slime for a maximum of efficiency
We offer a complete range of treatments highly concentrated in snail slime extract to take advantage of all its benefits on the skin. Our exclusive formulations incorporate the maximum possible amount of snail slime extract. By this extract, we seek to preserve the bioavailability of the proteins of interest. This means: the proportion of proteins in the extract which are effectively assimilated by the body. This varies depending on the solvent and the structure of the protein considered.
It is for this reason that our extraction process allows a gentle treatment of the material which, through maceration and a low-pressure cold purification cycle, preserves all the bioavailability of the proteins present in our snail slime extract.
