Dry or sensitive skin manifests as discomfort and temporary tightness, which is even more pronounced after bathing or showering. It overreacts to temperature differences, seasonal changes, the sun, friction, or even household detergents. The skin barrier, which forms the waterproof hydrolipidic film, has the function of protecting the skin from external aggressions and combats dehydration. The loss of this protective film leads to a disorder called xerosis or xeroderma of the skin. This is identified by a loss of suppleness and elasticity of the skin, which tends to tingle, tighten, redden, it may present scales (thin flakes of skin that detach from the epidermis) and then takes on a "crocodile skin" appearance. Poorly nourished, the epidermis no longer effectively plays its role as a defensive barrier and promotes the penetration of irritating and/or allergenic agents.
